Preparing for the arrival of Drupal 8

After 5 years of hard work and major architectual changes we're pleased to finally hear that a release date has been announced - November 19th 2015.

Drupal 8 is the latest release on the Drupal journey, and one that is substantially more powerful than previous versions.

With more than 200 new features and improvements, the upcoming release of the world’s leading open source web content management platform will win you over. Drupal 8 will set a new standard for ease of use, while offering countless new ways to tailor and deploy your content to the web. Easily customize data structures, listings, and pages, and take advantage of new capabilities for displaying data on mobile devices, building APIs, and adapting to multilingual needs.

With Drupal 7 released in 2011 it has taken a lot longer than anticipated to get to version 8. This will change going forward thanks to semantic versioning, meaning Drupal core major version releases every 6 months bringing new functionality quicker to keep up with the competition.

Some of the highlights you may be interested in as a user include

  • Integrated WYSIWYG and media editor as standard with in-place editing
  • Two column layouts for content creation making better use of the screen space and organisation of meta data
  • Built "Mobile first" to ensure compatibility of the admin system with smart phones and tablets
  • Responsive layouts, images and content breakpoints of devices baked in to core
  • Huge improved accessibility for the administration UI
  • Improved page building thanks to everything being encapsulated in blocks to drag around
  • New built in fields to improve data modelling out of the box for non developers
  • Support for HTML5 form elements improves data entry by reducing keyboard options on mobile devices to essential buttons only.

This is just the tip of the Drupal 8 iceberg that has floated in. For developers there's a whole huge world awaiting them that should make some of their dreams come true.

Ixis will begin building Drupal 8 powered sites in the new year (2016) and happy to speak now to book in your project. Get in touch to speak with us soon.
