Is your website mobile friendly?

In 2018 Google rolled out what it calls the “Mobile-First” Index. What does this mean exactly? Well, Google looks to (“crawl”) your website every so often and it collects lots of data about your website. This data is then compiled into a library and is used to rank your website against all the other websites. As for “Mobile-First Indexing”, rather than looking at the desktop version of your website first, it will look at the mobile version of your website first and will then crawl your desktop version.

So why does Google do this?

How people have been using the internet has changed dramatically, gone are the days where the desktop or laptop were the primary means of accessing the web, in the past decade, a huge influx of users have been using their smartphone more to search on the internet. If you don’t have a mobile-friendly website then, because of Mobile-First indexing, you may find your ranking, and thus the traffic to your website, is not what you want it to be.

To find out whether or not your website is already mobile friendly, Google have a tool you can use to find such information.

How do I make my website mobile friendly?

The simple answer is, make your website Mobile friendly. However, simple answers often don't have simple solutions. A new website can take months to build, particularly in the case of a large eCommerce website so if your website isn't already mobile friendly then this can take a while and unless you know exactly what you are doing, you will want to speak with an experienced website developer before hand. 

A few simple changes you can make in the short term however include simple tasks such as, making your website buttons large enough to work on mobile, using larger fonts sizes and compressing image and file sizes to help speed up your website loading times.
